Itelle Woodard Spencer was one of two children born into the union of Winston Woodard,Sr and Edna Mae Buchanan in Calhoun City, MS. Itelle accepted Christ at an early age at Piney Grove CME Church also in Calhoun City, MS. After graduating from Rust College she accepted a teaching position under the direction of MR Elmer Enochs her mentor. She later met and married John Gilbert Spencer and relocated to East Chicago, IN. Itelle continued her Christian Discipleship with Metropolitan CME Church in East Chicago. She was among one of the first District Officers of the church when the Gary district was organized. She served as Missionary President, Stewardness, choir member, church Historian, and Sunday School Superintendant where she continued to educate for the Lord.

Itelle always shared her love of Christ with family and friends, She also enjoyed baking, gardening, sewing, sharing family history information, and listening to WMBI(Moody Bible Institute)

On Saturday, October 8, 2011 she departed this life after a short illness, surrounded by loving family and friends. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, John Gilbert Spencer:parents, Winston Woodard,Sr. and Edna Mae Buchanan, sister, Jurlie Mae Enoch and brother, Winston Woodard,Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Gwendolyn Spencer of Hammond, IN, one sister, Sybil J. Harris of Memphis,TN, two grandsons, Timothy A Spencer of Charlotte, NC and Christopher Spencer of East Chicago, IN, one granddaughter, Tierney J. Dearon of East Chicago, IN,; four devoted cousins, Donald Buchanan of Milwaukee,WI, Katie Gregory of Chicago,IL, Rev. Darlene Young of Racine, WI, and William Young of Franklin, WI. five grandchildren and a host of other family and friends,
